College of the Atlantic: FUTURITY
Music by César Alvarez with the Lisps Book and Lyrics by César Alvarez with Story development and additional text by Molly Rice
Futurity is a musical about human and mechanical imagination. It centers on the mathematician and early computer scientist Ada Lovelace, and a Union Soldier, Julian Munro, together dreaming about utopia during the Civil War. It explores both the brutality of war, and how violence can be wielded in the pursuit of justice and freedom (in this case by bringing an end to slavery). As Julian marches south with the Union army, he and Ada develop plans for a "Steam Brain: -- a "thinking machine" that will bring about a new kind of human-machine imagination, one that might alleviate human suffering. So it's a play about utopian yearning and its limits. It's about the intimacy between humans and technology.
Students enrolled in the intensive, three-credit course Futurity: A Production Monster Course, led by COA professors Jodi Baker and Jonathan Henderson, have spent the term preparing for these performances. There will be a brief talkback/Q&A with the class after each performance.
Please note that K-95 masks or better will be required for all performances.
Thank you!
